Gotta get my priorities right

Having just returned from the UK I realise that the American way of life which I have adopted has some dangerous drawbacks. Fortunately I've been lucky to not have been too badly effected, however, I know that it's only a matter of time unless I change some of my habits pronto.

What am I talking about?

In the UK; people walk. In the DFW area of the US; people drive. That unhealthy ethic permeates all areas of my life in the US. Since coming to the US I eat fast food, I drink sugar rich soft drinks, I drive instead of walking, I watch TV. I certainly used to do these things before coming to the US, but never to the extent that I do now. There have been exceptions to this rule, but they were very much exceptions. For example, my wife and I entered the Body For Life (BFL) Challenge a few years ago. BFL was great, but it was difficult to incorporate into my life, since exercise in particular is something which you really have to strive to make time for compared to the UK where I'd often walk a couple of miles to and from work.

I very much want to get back to the fitness level which I once had. I expect that many people who know me already regard me as being quite fit, however, I used to have a resting pulse of about 43 and now it's about 59. Frankly I'm amazed that I've retained even that level of fitness! When I go riding on my mountian bike, albeit infrequently now, it's just not fun anymore. Where I used to power around Grapevine Lake's North Shore, taking 2 foot dropoffs with ease while overtaking tens of slower riders, now I have trouble pacing myself and tend to bonk within minutes.

I need to come up with a plan...
